Back to the pack
The number one reason that this blog was started was because during our first week of training at UWI our safety and security coordinator, Ann, said "Why do all PCVs come wearing big backpacks, this makes them stand out in a crowd more than anything else". We were all stunned to hear this as it is clearly stated on the packing list that we should have a backpack. The thing is, Jamaicans don't use backpacks unless they are in school, and therefore identified by their school uniform. What they do use are sachel bags, plastic market bags and most commonly scandal bags (black plastic bags). There are probably a variety of reasons for adults shunning backpacks, but whatever they are, you should be warned. Bring a sachel bag, one that goes around your shoulder and hits your hip. Since I began traveling with one it has really cut down on my "tourist harassment". You can get market bags here for cheap and they are a great way to carry large items. The other problem with traditional backpacks is they are easy to steal from. This was probably Ann's biggest concern. So when in Jamaica, do like the Jamaicans and carry the proper bag.
